How to find cheap hotels

1. Compare sites and deals

How you book your reservation can make a big difference in costs.

Start with sites like Booking.com, airbnb.com to get an overview of hotels in your desired area, but don’t rely on them to give you the full picture. Go on to research those hotels on your own. Search for promotion codes and perks such as free parking, breakfast or WiFi.

And don’t neglect a hotel’s own website. Some chains promise the best rate when you book via their site.

2. Negotiate your rate

Once you know the lay of the land, select a few favorites and pick up the phone. Tell the hotel the price you found via other sites and see if they can beat it.

3. Look for last-minute deals

Apps like HotelTonight and One:Night specialize in helping last-minute travelers get cheap hotel rooms. Sites such as Hotels.com and Hotwire also list deals for just a day or two in advance.

Last-minute bookings don’t work in every circumstance, though. Traveling for a crowded conference or holiday can lead to a spike in demand — and price.

4. Explore alternative accommodations

Finding a hotel isn’t your only lodging option. You can rent a room, apartment or entire house via sites like Airbnb and HomeAway.

Hostels are a great option for budget travelers, especially those venturing outside of the U.S. Don’t worry — you don’t need to share a dorm-style room with a mass of 19-year-olds (unless you want to). Most hostels offer a handful of private rooms with en suite bathrooms.

5. Pick a different neighborhood

Staying in the heart of the city typically costs more. Save a few bucks by staying away from the city center, but near public transportation for easy downtown access.

6. Use your affiliations

Seniors, private, government employees, students, members of the military and AAA members may qualify for discounted hotel rates when traveling.

Best places to visit in Europe

It is no secret that Europe is filled with beautiful places to visit. With its grand cities, fairytale-like towns, soaring mountain ranges, and gorgeous beaches, there is a seemingly endless list of gorgeous places to explore. Whether you are planning your next trip to Europe, or just trying to figure out where to travel to next, here are 30 beautiful places to visit in Europe.

1. Paris, France

Paris has it all, which is why it’s as close to a must-see as there is in Europe. Food, history, art, culture, and beauty around every corner. A highlight for me is doing a bike tour around the city.

2. Florence, Italy

There are so many places to go in Italy, but Florence is so special you really can’t miss it. The art and history are obvious perks but doing food tours and cooking classes are also favorites of mine. And Florence makes a great base for exploring the treasures of Tuscany.

3. Santorini, Greece

The best holiday destination in Europe (but I might be biased). The caldera views are as incredible as anything you’ll see anywhere. Sunsets, hikes, boat tours, local wines, black volcanic beaches, and the most luxurious hotels along the Mediterranean.

4. London, England

London, England.
Everyone knows London is packed with world-class sights, museums, and historical landmarks. What might be surprising is all the great local markets, shops, neighborhoods, cafes, and restaurants. Be sure to get away from the most popular attractions and seek out the less-touristy neighborhoods of greater London.

5. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Places in Europe: Best boat tours and canals in Europe.
One of my absolute favorite cities in Europe. A wonderful city center that’s as pedestrian and bike friendly as you’ll find. Loaded with fun cafes, restaurants, great museums, and leafy parks. Perhaps more than any European city Amsterdam is a place you’ll want to live in after your first day.

6. Barcelona, Spain

My favorite city in Spain. Jammed with great food, lively nightlife, art, architecture, and eye popping sightseeing. A great holiday destination for families too.

7. Rome, Italy

The Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Sistine Chapel, and Vatican. Rome is packed with some of Europe’s top attractions. Then throw in the food, shops, cafes, and funky neighborhoods. Anything less than 5 days in Rome and you’ll feel cheated.

9. Edinburgh, Scotland

Places in Europe: European city near castles and history.
An awesome mix of castles, history, stunning scenery, and modern Scottish life, Edinburgh is one of the must visit cities of the U.K

10. Prague, Czech Republic

Places in Europe: Best historical city to visit in Europe.
As close to an idyllic European city as there is. Prague is a favorite of almost anyone who visits. Loads to see and do here – and the beer is pretty darn good too.

11. Nice, France

A fantastic base for exploring South France and a wonderful mid-sized town in its own right. Easy train connections to Monaco, Cannes, Lyon, and many great beaches along the Mediterranean coast.

How to find cheap flights

Airfares have increased since travel resumed in 2022 as the word headed off to explore the world once again, but were faced with limited capacity and rising fuel prices. Airline tickets only escalate over the summer season. Here are some tips for taking to the skies without breaking the bank.

1. Don’t search by destination only

Flip the way you search for flights. Use the Google Explore map, enter dates, your departure airport and leave the destination open (or pick a region, such as Asia). You’ll get an instant picture of which places are cheaper to reach.

2. Use a good flight search site like google

Try sites such as Omio.com or MakeMyTrip.com. You can compare airlines as well as see which days of the week offer better value.

3. Avoid travelling on weekends and peak season

“Weekend flights are typically the most expensive and highest in demand,” says Finder travel expert Stephanie Yip. “Flying out on a weekday can really help keep costs dwn. And avoid school holidays and peak seasons.”

Flexibility is the key to cheaper flights.

4. Try to book two one-way tickets

Travel expert recommends mixing things up. “Flights don’t have to be booked as returns – booking separate one-way fares can end up saving you money.”

5. Try to be flexible with travel dates

Sometimes airline prices can drop drastically between days.

6. Set an airfare alert by visiting airlines website

Sites like Google Flights allow you to do this, and then notify you when there is a drop in price.

7. Consider some land travel to save money

When time is on your side, consider land transfers. Instead of flying into London, fly to Paris instead (if it makes financial sense). It doesn’t take long (or cost much) to get between the two cities on a super-fast train.

Scheduling a stopover can make airfares cheaper.

8. Plan a stopover to save cost

Flying direct can have a huge impact on how much you pay for your flight, especially if you’re crossing an ocean.

9. Take a domestic flight first to reduce cost

Use a positioning fare to get you to your destination if you’re flying internationally. These are short domestic flights from your base to a second domestic destination to get a cheaper fare for the longer leg.

10. Try bypassing the bigger airports

Think about flying into secondary airports in major cities, if that’s an option. There’s often a price difference between fares.
